Glen Johnson has rated Moises Caicedo and four other signings who moved to Chelsea in a big-money deal under the new owner Todd Boehly.

The former Chelsea player has claimed that the Blues were forced to pay over the odds for Moises Caicedo after winning the bidding battle with Liverpool.

What happened?

The 22-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder is still struggling to settle at Stamford Bridge after an ordinary start to life in the west London club.

Liverpool tried to secure the acquisition of Caicedo in a late offer of 110 million pounds but the player shook his head to the deal and later moved to London for an eye-catching 115 million pounds making him the most expensive player in the Premier League history.

However, Caicedo has since failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, registering no goals or assists in 17 appearances across all competitions.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are also struggling to pick up results, as they sit 12th in the Premier League after back-to-back setbacks.

Glen Johnson, the former Chelsea defender has questioned the price tag and said that Caicedo has failed to live up to the 'hype'.

Speaking with reporters, he said: “He’s a bloody good player, but I don’t think he’s living up to the massive hype when Liverpool and Chelsea were fighting over him and it was the talk of the town”.

"What I think Liverpool have done there is cost Chelsea a hell of a lot more money and I don't think he's living up to that hype".

He added; "He’s a good player. Was he worth the price tag? Probably not. Brighton only had one chance to sell him, so they obviously tried to ride that hype to get as much money as they possibly could for him, but for me, he’s not living up to that hype. I would still say he’s a good signing, but not for that price".

Johnson also pointed out Mykhailo Mudryk as another player in the Chelsea squad who's not living up to expectations.

The former Blues star is equally disappointed with the Ukraine International, who cost Chelsea £89 million after they defeated Arsenal for his acquisition.

Mudryk has got just two goals and one assist in 14 Premier League appearances which highlights his difficulty in front of goal.

Johnson said; "Unfortunately, you’d have to say he’s been greatly disappointing when you consider the attributes he’s got.

"For a player with blistering speed and trickery, he doesn’t seem to use it". He came for a lot of money, which isn’t his fault, but I thought we’d have seen a hell of a lot more from him".

He added; "It’s frustrating because it looks as if he has it all, but he doesn’t have the end product at the moment. We were hoping that he would get a couple of goals and kick on, but then he did score a few and he still didn’t kick on. He’s been frustrating overall".

Glen Johnson has also claimed that Enzo Fernandez who joined the Blues from Benfica during the summer can not singlehandedly change the London club's current situation.

The midfielder was one of the key players in Argentina's victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar but has failed to live up to standard since his 106 million pounds move to the Premier League.

Speaking about Enzo, Johnson said; "Top player, one of Todd Boehly's successful signings, but he's not good enough to change Chelsea's fortunes by himself".

Glen Johnson claimed Raheem Sterling could perform at a higher level and fans would be expecting more from the former Manchester City star.

Raheem Sterling was one of Todd Boehly's first signings after the American took over from Roman Abrahamovic in May 2022.

Sterling joined the Blues from Man City in a deal reportedly worth £50 million during the summer of 2022, but the Englishman has been performing below what was seen during his stint with the Citizens.

So far this season, Raheem Sterling has recorded six goals and registered one assist.

Speaking about Starling, Glen Johnson said; "I don't think his performances for Chelsea have been as good as they should have been, he's capable of being world-class, fans would have been expecting a little more from him".

Glen Johnson, the former Liverpool player also takes a dig at Marc Cucurella who joined the Blues from Brighton & Hove Albion.

He said; "I do believe that he would be a positive signing for the club long-term, but more because of his recent performances instead of his early days, he seems to have gotten his manager's respect".

The Spaniard joined Chelsea in August 2022, in a £56 million deal but has performed below what he displayed at Brighton making him lose the first-team spot since the beginning of the new season.

What's next for Chelsea?

Chelsea have previously suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League making them fall to the 12th spot in the league standings. Therefore, they will be desperate to revive their fortunes when they host Sheffield United on Saturday, December 16.
