Herve Renard is on the verge of becoming Egypt's new head coach following Rui Vitoria's disastrous Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.

What happened?

The Pharaohs are one of the teams expected to shine in the African Cup of Nations, but their poor performance saw them crash in Round 16 after they lost to D.R Congo in a penalty shootout.

The team, who have an extraordinary seven-time African championship record, suffered an embarrassing setback, losing 8-7 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 16, after a 1-1 draw in extra time in San Pedro Stadium.

The outcome prompted the team administrations to be on the outlook for a new manager and have identified Herve Renard as a potential replacement for Vitoria.

However, the Egyptian Football Association are reportedly in advanced discussions with Herve Renard, who is the current coach of France’s women’s national team.

Renard’s name has emerged prominently as Egypt aspires to fill the void set to be left by Portuguese manager Rui Vitoria, whose departure appears forthcoming.

Vitoria is expected to be fired as the Pharaohs’ head coach in the coming days due to the team’s horrible performance shown in the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

On the other hand, the 55-year-old Renard has tons of experience under his belt, he has previously managed six international teams throughout his career, including Zambia, twice, Angola, Ivory Coast, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia, as well as France's women's team.

He has won the African Cup of Nations twice, with both Zambia and the Ivory Coast, becoming the first manager to win the African most prestigious tournament twice with two different teams.

However, he remains determined to fulfill his contractual commitments. This includes participating in the upcoming Olympics with the French women’s team.

Egypt isn’t the only nation eyeing Renard’s services. Algeria and Ghana are also reported to have shown interest in securing his service.

As discussions about Renard’s possible appointment proceed, former national team manager Carlos Queiroz also emerges as another candidate.

The forthcoming decision of Egypt’s head coach shows the nation's commitment to reawaken their football agenda for international attainment.

What's next for Egypt?

It remains to be seen if Herve Renard is interested in leaving his post with France.

Meanwhile, Egypt have time on its hands, though, as they do not play again until June 3, in a World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso.

In addition, football lovers expect the official announcement, with Renard’s potential leadership adding affair to Egypt’s football program.
