Nigerian Catholic bishops have aired their disapproval with the Pope's stance on same-sex marriage.
During the opening of the 2024 first plenary assembly in Abuja on Sunday, the President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji maintained their opposition to Pope Francis's declaration that the Catholic Church can now bless same-sex couples.
The bishop asserted that such blessings shouldn't be imparted following the ceremony of a civil union. They said the Pope's stance on homosexuality raised questions across Africa and other parts of the world as the people wondered how a priest could bless homosexual couples without confusion.
The bishop urged the church to safeguard the faith in its purity and integrity and uphold the teaching of the Church based on the Holy Scripture and Tradition. Ugorji added that there is no possibility of blessing same-sex couples or unions in churches in Africa.
