Manchester United are said to be monitoring Julen Lopetegui to take over the club should Erik ten Hag eventually get fired.

The former Ajax boss is currently under intense pressure after a series of disastrous setbacks, including a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth, followed by a Champions League loss against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, December 12, which dumped them out of European competition.

The Red Devils' European football comeback has turned into a great failure.

The 20-time Premier League champions lost to Bayern Munich on the last matchday of the group stage, finishing bottom and missing out on a place in the Europa League play-offs.

However, the projects of Erik ten Hag are in dilemma, and according to the Spanish outlet Relevo, Julen Lopetegui is well-positioned to replace the Dutchman.

The Spanish coach was recently linked with a move to join Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, but the Middle East outfit ended up putting their faith in Marcelo Gallardo.

According to an insider, Saudi Arabia's offers for Julen Lopetegui were reportedly 18 million euros but the former Spanish coach rejected them because his priority was to continue his career in England.

However, at the time of writing, there is no report in the British press to suggest that there will be a change in the Red Devils dugout.

The board will have to contemplate whether it is time for a new change at the club or whether it is better to give the current manager more time, a strategy that has already been carried out at other clubs such as Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp has managed more than 450 matches.

Julen Lopetegui's most current period was a sudden departure from Wolverhampton, with whom he differed on the planning for this season.

The 52-year-old left Wolves in August after nine months in charge of the English club, agreeing on a seven-figure compensation package to leave just three days before the start of the 2023/2024 Premier League season after a disagreement between the Spaniard and the club's owners deteriorated over transfer policy.

Lopetegui is reported to be a higher target by Man United and is well-tipped to become the club's sixth permanent manager following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement after 27 years in charge just over a decade ago.

What's next for Man United and Erik ten Hag?

The Old Trafford outfit currently sits in 6th position in the Premier League table and they'll lock horns against Liverpool on Sunday, December 17, however, a trip and results at Anfield will determine the future of Erik ten Hag if he'll remain as the club manager or not.
